The Spaniard’s present deal expires in 2016 and United had previously indicated they had abandoned hope of the 24-year-old signing an extension.

But following the collapse of a proposed move to Real Madrid on transfer deadline day, negotiations have begun, with De Gea’s agent Jorge Mendes attending the club’s training complex on Thursday. De Gea is yet to play this season.

Manager Louis van Gaal refused to pick the former Atletico Madrid man until the end of the transfer window, such was the uncertainty surrounding his future.

De Gea, United’s player of the season for the past two years, was upset at Van Gaal’s claim he did not want to play in the opening games of the season, although club sources have since indicated any damage to the pair’s relationship will be easily repaired.

Lose, but Manchester United not planning any panic signings

Manchester United manager, Louis van Gaal says he will not make any panic signings before the transfer window closes on Tuesday evening.

The Fifth Spanish team in Champions League

Spain became the first nation to have five teams qualify for the Champions League group stages as Valencia beat Monaco in a qualifying play-off.

The 2001 runners-up, who have ex-Manchester United defender Phil Neville on their coaching staff, join Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Sevilla are also in the draw after qualifying via their triumph in last season’s Europa League. The draw for the group stages will be made on Thursday.

Valencia secured their place via a 4-3 aggregate victory, despite a 2-1 defeat in France. Former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo scored the visitors’ crucial away goal.

This was the first season that is was possible for one nation to have five team in the 32-team group stages, with Uefa introducing a Champions League place as a prize for the Europa League winners in 2014-15.

Spanish teams have won four of the last seven Champions League, with Barcelona defeating Juventus in May’s final.

Woods shares lead at Wyndham midway

Tiger Woods continued his quest for a first title in two years with a 65 to share the halfway lead at the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

it is the first time Woods has led an event after 36 holes since the 2013 WGC Bridgestone, his last title to date.

The 39-year-old has slipped to 286 in the world rankings but carded five birdies and an eagle to reach 11 under. He shares the lead with 26-year-old Tom Hoge, in his first full season on the PGA Tour, who followed a 62 with a 67.

Woods, who shot a 64 on Thursday, opened round two with a three-putt to bogey the first hole but hit some impressive irons, a six-iron at the 235-yard par-three 12th finishing three feet from the flag.

Then at the par-five 15th he struck a three-iron over water to within 10 feet to set up an eagle.

“I’ve been close for a few months now. I have had it going at times but this has been way more consistent,” said Woods.

US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love is only one behind the leaders, the 51-year-old returning a 66 on an ideal morning for low scoring. A further shot back is Brandt Snedeker, the 2007 champion, who posted nine birdies to equal the course record of 61.

Memphis magic boosts ManUtd

Memphis Depay scored twice to inspire Manchester United to victory over Club Brugge in their Champions league play-off.

Brugge took a surprise first-leg lead through Michael Carrick’s own goal. But Depay drove in a low strike and brilliantly cut inside and curled in a 25-yard shot to put United ahead.

Brugge defender Brandon Mechele was sent off for two bookings after 80 minutes and Depay crossed for Marouane Fellaini to head in a late third. The home side looked set to be frustrated in their attempts to add to Depay’s double as the Dutchman ballooned a clear chance to claim his hat-trick.

But Fellaini came on as a late substitute for the out-of-sorts Wayne Rooney and finally turned United’s superiority into a two-goal cushion going into next Wednesday’s return leg.

Angel Di Maria : Things did not go well at ManUtd

Argentina winger,Angel Di Maria (27), suggested that his family were unhappy in the north-west following an attempted break-in at their Cheshire home.

He added: “The three parties agreed. Me, Manchester United and PSG agreed the deal.”

Di Maria moved to Old Trafford from Real Madrid in August 2014 for a British record £59.7m. His relationship with manager Louis van Gaal reportedly became strained in the second half of the season as pelvic and hamstring injuries limited his involvement.

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said: “I’d like to thank him for choosing PSG. I know a lot of big clubs were interested because he is a great player. He’s already won the Champions League with Real; I hope he can do it with us.”

Di Maria was man of the match when Real beat city rivals Atletico to lift their 10th European Cup in 2014 last year.

Di Maria set to have PSG medical

The winger, a British record £59.7m signing last summer, is expected in Doha on Sunday to meet PSG officials.

The fee for the 27-year-old Argentina international is believed to be about £44.5m. Di Maria did not join United’s pre-season tour of the United States after appearing at the Copa America in Chile.

The former Real Madrid player moved to Old Trafford last August after helping the Spanish giants to a 10th European Cup in 2014.

But after a promising start, including a goal and an assist in three of his first four appearances, his form fell away midway through the season. He started only one match after a defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final on 9 March.

Woods frustrated at slow progress to regain form

Tiger Woods says it is taking longer than expected to regain his best form. The former world number one and 14-time major winner has dropped to 266th in the rankings following back surgery and changes to his swing.

This year Woods, 39-year-old, has also missed the cut in successive majors – the US Open and The Open – for the first time.

The American, who has not won a major since 2008, has missed the cut in three of his eight starts this year and his best result came when he finished tied for 17th at the US Masters.

Woods will host this week’s US PGA National at the par-71 Robert Trent Jones Gold Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Great Britain’s Justin Rose will also be in action at the event where he is the defending champion.
